The first half of 2025 has been a solid and encouraging period for progressive rock, marked by notable new releases from some of the genre’s most respected artists. Dream Theater returned with a focused and exciting reunion album, while Steven Wilson delivered his most “Prog” album in years. Alongside these major names, a number of other bands—both established and emerging—have contributed to a diverse and engaging slate of releases that show the genre remains active, creative, and steadily evolving. Here are some of the best songs from this period, as we get ready for another incredible six months of music.

Dream Theater – Midnight Messiah (from Parasomnia) – The third single and heaviest track from Dream Theater’s reunion album with Mike Portnoy back on drums.

 

Steven Wilson – Objects Outlive Us (from The Overview) – One of 2 long epics, this is the first song on the album which guides the listener through Steven Wilson’s musical excellence.

 

Cosmic Cathedral – Deep Water Suite: Launch Out (from Deep Water) – Part of the 38 minute epic suite from the debut album from Neal Morse, Chester Thompson, Phil Keaggy, and Byron House.

 

Between the Buried and Me – Things We Tell Ourselves in the Dark (from The Blue Nowhere) – The first single from the yet to be released 11th studio album by the prog-metal pioneers, showcasing their most proggy sound to date.

 

Edensong – Our Road to Dust (from Our Road to Dust) – The epic closing and title track from the brilliant new album from these American proggers which comes after a long hiatus.

 

Dim Gray – Attakulla (from Shards) – The outstanding prog epic that closes out the album Shards from Dim Gray, one of the pleasant surprise albums of the year.
