As the coronavirus continues to decimate tours and the music industry in general, many artists have used this time to get creative, some streaming live shows, some writing new material. Sons of Apollo guitarist Bumblefoot has been as busy as anyone with the release of 2 new acoustic EPs having been released during this period of home recording. Barefoot 2 and Barefoot 3, released on May 8th and June 5th respectively, are sets of uniquely arranged covers, showcasing all of Bumblefoot musical talents.
Barefoot 2 kicks off with a brilliant rendition of Iron Maiden’s “Wasted Years” and shows that even a classic Maiden tune can work on acoustic. The other covers dive into pop, singer songwriter fair with “Vienna” from Billy Joel, and “Maybe I’m Amazed” from Paul McCartney as standouts.
Barefoot 3 is perhaps the more adventurous collection and also includes work from drummer Kyle Hughes. It begins with an acoustic version of one of Bumblefoot’s own songs “Sleepwalking” before and incredible version of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” takes the listener on a sonic journey. Also included is a stunning version of Asia’s “Only Time Will Tell”, and a couple of unexpected covers that totally work in Dexy Midnight Runners’ “Come On Eileen” and “Tell Me Something Good from Rufus and Chaka Khan.
These are a lot of fun to listen to and offer some great alternatives for the rock or prog fan to enjoy to enjoy some reimagined pop tunes.
