Legendary artist Peter Gabriel has ushered in 2026 with a new release, unveiling “Been Undone,” the first song from his forthcoming album o\i, timed to coincide with the year’s first full moon — the Wolf Moon — on Saturday, January 3, 2026.
Written and produced by Gabriel, “Been Undone” was recorded at Real World Studios in Bath and The Beehive in London. The version released is the Dark-Side Mix, crafted by longtime collaborator Tchad Blake.
Speaking about the launch of the new project, Gabriel explained:
‘I’m delighted to say that tonight, at the full moon, we will be beginning another year of full moon releases under the name o\i. The songs are a mix of thoughts and feelings.
I have been thinking about the future and how we might respond to it. We are sliding into a period of transition like no other, most likely triggered in three waves; AI, quantum computing and the brain computer interface. Artists have a role to look into the mists and, when they catch sight of something, to hold up a mirror.
These are my lumpy bits –i/o: the inside has a new way out and o\i: the outside has a new way in.
We are not, and have never been, the exclusively self-determining, independent beings that have been given the run of the world. We are something else, a part of nature, a part of everything and feeling a connection, shaking our booty and giving and receiving some love can help us find our place – and put a big smile on our faces.
Some of these songs are going to form part of the brain project that I’ve been exploring for a number of years, and some just make me feel happy. I hope you like them.’
Continuing the visual-art tradition established with i/o, each track on o\i will be paired with a dedicated artwork. “Been Undone” is accompanied by Ciclotrama 156 (Palindrome) by São Paulo–based artist Janaina Mello Landini. With a background in architecture and a deep interest in physical and mathematical systems, Mello Landini’s work explores how individual elements interact within larger, interconnected structures.
The Ciclotrama series — combining “cycle” with the Latin trama (warp or weaving) — consists of intricate, branching sculptures created from unraveled rope and organized into fractal forms. In Ciclotrama 156 (Palindrome), these ideas are presented through a mirrored composition built around a central knot, allowing the piece to be read visually both forward and backward.
As with i/o, Gabriel will roll out o\i gradually across the year. Each full moon in 2026 will bring a new song, with the complete album revealed by year’s end. Every track will feature two distinct interpretations: a Dark-Side Mix and a Bright-Side Mix. The Dark-Side versions will arrive with each full moon, mixed by Tchad Blake, while the Bright-Side mixes — handled by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent — will be released on the corresponding new moons.
