On July 30th, O.S.I. will release vinyl and CD re-issues of their classic albums, Office of Strategic Influence (2003) and Free (2006), via Metal Blade Records – the first time both records will be available on vinyl! Free was mastered for vinyl by Alan Douches at West West Side, and 2021 marks the 15th anniversary of this seminal release.
Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos originally recruited Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy to work on a progressive metal album. When keyboardist and vocalist Kevin Moore (founder of Chroma Key and former Dream Theater member) joined the project, the musical direction of the first O.S.I album changed to become more focused on soundscapes and composition than musicianship. Sean Malone (of Cynic and Gordian Knot) and Steven Wilson (vocals on the track “Shutdown”) also performed on the debut album, while Joey Vera replaced Sean Malone on bass guitar on ‘Free’.
