Few new bands make as big a splash out of nowhere as US Prog Metal group Nospūn did with the brilliant debut album Opus in 2023. The album garnered the band attention from critics and fans alike. While these fans eagerly wait for the follow-up, the band is released the EP titled Ozai. The 5 song colection offers fans a glimpse into the band’s earliest material, now revitalized with a decade’s worth of growth and refinement. Originally written during their formative years, these songs have been meticulously re-recorded, remixed, and remastered to align with the sonic identity of their 2023 debut album, Opus. While Ozai isn’t a direct continuation of Opus’ conceptual narrative, it serves as a retrospective showcase of Nospūn’s musical roots, reimagined through the lens of their current technical and artistic capabilities.
The lineup remains as formidable as ever, with Phillip Rich (Vocals), James Nelson (Guitars), Cole Millward (Bass) and Paul Wood (Drums) delivering their signature blend of technical prowess and melodies. Produced again by bassist Cole Millward, Ozai sonically mirrors the high standards set by Opus, ensuring these older compositions sound fresh, modern, and cohesive within the band’s evolving discography. By infusing their early songwriting with the rich, polished sound fans have come to expect, Nospūn bridges its past and present seamlessly.
One of the clear highlights of the EP is the single “The Effervescent Power,” a track that perfectly encapsulates the band’s ability to balance melody with technical brilliance. Featuring an outstanding, soaring guitar solo from Wenner, the song builds to a powerful climax that showcases both the band’s dynamic songwriting and instrumental prowess. Additionally, Ozai introduces a heavier edge to Nospūn’s sound, with growl vocals making an appearance on a couple of tracks, adding an extra layer of intensity and contrast.
The EP leans into a heavier, more aggressive sound compared to Opus, hinting at a side of the band that thrives on dynamic contrast and intensity. While Ozai itself is not an indication of where Nospūn is headed next, it serves as an exciting companion piece while they continue work on their highly anticipated sophomore full-length album. If this release is any indication, their next record will further cement their place in the modern progressive metal scene, pushing boundaries both musically and conceptually.
